FIFTEEN PASSENGER VAN ROLLOVER
Many of the large passenger vans that are
rolling over are still in use by day care centers, church groups, scout
troops, schools, community organizations, retirement homes, carpools,

FIFTEEN PASSENGER VANS CONTINUE TO BE USED
Despite the rising death toll and numerous
safety warnings and federal legislation banning sale of the vans to schools,
still, families and groups with children routinely use these
fifteen passenger vans to transport church groups and sports
teams. The rollover safety advisory indicates that fifteen passenger
vans might be more likely  to
roll over when fully loaded with occupants than when lightly loaded due to
changes in the center of gravity. Further analysis showed that fifteen
passenger vans with ten or more occupants had three times the rollover ratio
than those with fewer than ten occupants. Sudden vehicle maneuvers could
increase the propensity to roll over. This is of particular concern for
drivers who normally drive smaller passenger vehicles and are therefore
unfamiliar with a loaded fifteen passenger van's limitations and
responsiveness.National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has
found that the risk of a rollover crash is greatly increased when 10 or more
people ride in a fifteen passenger van. This increased risk occurs because
the passenger weight raises the vehicle�s center of gravity and
causes it to shift rearward. As a result, the van has less resistance to
rollover and handles differently from other commonly driven passenger
vehicles, making it more difficult to control in an emergency situation.
Placing any load on the roof also raises the center of gravity and increases
the likelihood of a van rollover.
If a fifteen passenger van overturns at highway
speeds, often van's roof supports fail or collapse,the seatbelts can
open, the seat backs can collapse. When any of these safety systems fail to
perform as designed, the passengers and drivers can be seriously
injured during the rollover, roof crush or by being ejected.
