Firestone Steeltex Tire Recall – Tire Failure Related Accidents & Rollovers

Firestone is recalling over 300,000 Steeltex tires like those equipped on some models of the Ford Excursion. The Steeltex tire recall comes three and a half years after the well publicized Firestone tire recall associated with many highway rollover accidents involving Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicles, due to tire tread separation, blowouts and failures.

Firestone Tire Company, a part of Japan’s Bridgestone Corp., announced the recall of tires mounted on the Ford Excursion, following three fatal crashes that claimed five lives. The Firestone Steeltex tires in question, which are officially called Steeltex Radial AT, LT-265/75R16-Load Range D, were made between March 1999 and December 2002. According to industry research, there are about 300,000 of these Firestone Steel-Tex tires still in use.

NHTSA – Firestone Steeltex Tire Recall

Per reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) became aware of the accidents after Firestone Tire Company in December submitted claims and warranty data to the agency. The tire warranty data submissions is required under federal auto-safety laws passed in the wake of the 2000 Firestone recall of 6.5 million tires. The new regulation requires manufacturers to submit volumes of additional information about their products to NHTSA officials in an attempt to catch a tire failure of defect early and require the manufacturer to conduct a voluntary tire recall.
