FORD 15 PASSENGER VAN ROLLOVERS OVERVIEW
The Ford 15 Passenger vans like most SUV's and pickup trucks has by it's their very nature has a high center of gravity, therefore can be a very unstable vehicle on and off the road. Most vans do not have a roll bar, cages or other roof crush or occupant protection. And to make matters worse, few 15 passenger and cargo vans meet the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) roof support safety standard (FMVSS 216) Most 15 passenger van rollover accidents occur when the driver is forced to take an emergency or evasive action after steering in one direction and then rapidly correcting in the opposite direction, such as a typical avoidance maneuver with a road hazard, tire blowout, tire tread separation, a deer, a dog, pothole or another vehicle in their path. This evasive action often results in a rollover. Other times, the driver of the 15 passenger van due to fatigue or a distraction inside or outside of the van, may slightly drift onto the shoulder of the road, and then in an attempt to regain control by steering back into the lane and in doing so the 15 passenger van starts to travel perpendicular to the direction of travel and slide sideways for a short distance, before the wheel's rims dig into the pavement thereby launching the vehicle into a rollover .
FORD PASSENGER VAN ROLLOVER - ROOF CRUSH & ROOF PILLAR COLLAPSE In a Ford 15 passenger van rollover or Ford Cargo van rollover, the weight of the van is almost more than the roof can stand and often severe roof crush is observed. The additional weight of this SUV causes greatly increased pressures and forces on the side doors and the roof pillars. This increased weight and pressure on the roof supports often result in roof failure or roof crush, especially at highway speeds. This crushing of the roof of the Ford Van during a rollover, subjects the driver and passengers to severe injuries and death as the roof crushes into their head and necks, resulting in spinal cord injuries, paralysis and death. Roof crush injuries are caused by the energy of the vehicle in a roll creating compressive forces pushing down on the top of skull when the head is in an upright position. The compression causes a bursting fracture in the C5 to C7 of the cervical spine. This bursting fracture causes a loss of intravertebral space both anterior and posterior. In other rollovers, the roof intruding is not the cause of injury, but it is when the occupant "drives" into the roof, resulting in the head flexing forward before receiving an impact to the top of the head.
