FORD SUV & TRUCK ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS & PRODUCT LIABILITY ACTIONS

FORD ROLLOVER & STABILITY PROBLEMS

ford f150 rollover, f 150 rollover, expedition rollover accidents, lincoln navigator, Ford 15 passenger van rollover door lock failures, door latch failure, roof crush, E350 van rollover, club van rollover, door latch opening, weak roof support, roof crush, post collision fuel fed fires, lawsuit, lawyer, defective door, door lock recall, class action, f 250 rollover lawsuit, door opening during accidentMost sports utilities vehicles and trucks by their very nature have a high center of gravity and are therefore as a group, the most unstable vehicles on the road. Although SUVs are designed to be driven off the road, very few have rollbars, roll cages or other roof crush or occupant protection. And to make matters worse, few SUVs, vans or trucks meet the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) roof support safety standard (FMVSS 216). Most rollover accidents occur when the driver is forced to take an emergency or evasive action after steering in one direction and then rapidly correcting in the opposite direction, such as a typical avoidance maneuver with a road hazard, a deer, a dog, pothole or another vehicle in their path. This evasive action often results in a rollover.

FORD ROOF CRUSH- ROOF PILLAR COLLAPSE

Rollover crashes show that the larger SUVs including the Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion and Lincoln Navigator and especially larger sized pick-up trucks such as the Ford F150, F250 and F350 Pickup can not withstand a rollover without serious roof crush. According to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 216, a roof pillar a passenger car must deform no more than five (5) inches when subjected to a force of 1 1/2 times the vehicle's weight, or 5,000 lbs. whichever is less. Pickup truck (light trucks) are not even required to meet the minimal requirement of FMVSS 216. For example, the roof pillars of a 6,000 lb. pickup truck, would need to withstand only 5/6 of the vehicles own weight in order to pass FMV's 216, even though the trucks roof often crushes under its own weight. This "standard" only applies to the front roof supports/pillars not the center or rears ones. (Ford Truck Roof Failures)

FORD DOOR LOCK FAILURES

ford f150 rollover, f 150 rollover, expedition rollover accidents, lincoln navigator, Ford 15 passenger van rollover door lock failures, door latch failure, roof crush, E350 van rollover, club van rollover, door latch opening, weak roof support, roof crush, post collision fuel fed fires, lawsuit, lawyer, defective door, door lock recall, class action, f 250 rollover lawsuit, door opening during accidentAll vehicle door latch systems, including both the inside and outside door handles, are required by the (FMVSS 206) to withstand certain pressures or forces to keep vehicle's door look from opening during a rollover or typical accident. FMVSS 206 relates to the door latch and FMVSS 206 requires that the door handle and latch mechanism be able to withstand 30 g's of inertial loading in an accident.See:(Ford Door Latch Failures) If the door lock or door latch failure to hold and opens at under 30 g's, then the door will open allowing the occupants to be ejected or face untold injuries from being partially ejected or hit by other objects and other vehicles. Many Ford vehicles may contain this manufacturing defect in the outside handle which may make the handle non-compliant with FMVSS 206 and dangerous to the consumer.

FORD SEATBELT FAILURES

During the violence of a rollover, the vehicle and its occupants are subject to destructive and potentially deadly forces. A properly designed vehicle that is crashworthy helps to minimize the destructive effect of these forces by distributing them over as longer a period of time, over as large a surface area as possible and to parts of the body that are more capable of withstanding such forces. Crashworthiness cases in law typically involve the failure to one or more components to meet these basic design objectives. In a rollover a properly designed and working safety restraint system is a must for survival. Seatbelts perform a central role in occupant protection. Properly designed seatbelts should restrain the occupant by preventing ejection and minimizing the occupant's violent movement within the vehicle during the crash event. Unquestionably, seatbelts have saved thousands of lives. With the introduction of mandatory usage laws, many more Americans are now wearing seatbelts compared to prior decades. As a consequenceof more frequent usage, design flaws in seatbelts have become apparent. The most common of these design defects and failures involve seat belt buckles that fail to hold or restrain on impact, shoulder belt that allow too much slack

FORD POST COLLISION FUEL FED FIRES

Design defects related to fuel fed fires can involve several different vehicle systems. The design issues can relate to issues of fuel filler cap design, fuel line design, fuel tank design, and also include fuel pump design. Fuel systems should be designed to maintain integrity during a rollover or other foreseeable accident. (Ford Fuel Fed Fires) Fuel leakage as a result of an impact may result in fire, or as it is known in the industry, a PCFFF---a post-collision fuel fed fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA www.nhtsa.dot.gov) regulates crash testing of automobiles and has created regulations that set standards for fuel system integrity.
