Tip leads to arrest
Driver charged after dryer causes wreck The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/14/04 The day after a clothes
dryer fell from his truck and onto the northbound lanes of I-75 causing a
deadly crash, Jose Luna Gonzales returned to the same Jonesboro Home Depot to
buy another dryer. As he did a day earlier, Gonzales, police say, paid $300
cash.
But this time, according to police, he left his first name and cellphone number with the cashier, who talked to him about an extended warranty. That cashier left work and didn't return to her job for two days — unaware police had been trying to find Gonzales to question him about the crash. And after buying the second dryer, Gonzales left for South Carolina — unaware, he told police, that someone had been killed on the highway after swerving to avoid the dryer. On Sunday, Gonzales, a 25-year-old contract construction worker from Hapeville, remained in the Clayton County Jail on second-degree vehicular homicide and other misdemeanor charges. Police said they were fortunate to find Gonzales, who initially left few clues, except for blurry video footage captured on Home Depot's surveillance system. That video, which showed Gonzales and his young son pushing the dryer through the parking lot, was aired on television. In the end, it was the cashier, police said, who helped solve the case."Absolutely," said Capt. Jeff Turner, a spokesman for the Clayton County Police Department. Without the information, he said, police "still would be at loss."Gonzales was arrested Friday night and made his first court appearance for a bond hearing Saturday — the same day Michael Robert Hall, the director of the MBA program at Clark Atlanta University, was laid to rest.Hall, 43, was returning from his sons' preseason baseball game in McDonough when he swerved to avoid the dryer on I-75 north near Forest Park.
Hall's Isuzu Rodeo
flipped several times before resting against a barrier. Hall died at the
scene; his sons, Michael, 9, and Marcus, 6, were treated and released from
Southern Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.Hall's father-in-law, Dr.
Samuel Tucker, said news of Gonzales' arrest was a relief."It won't bring
Michael back to life," Tucker said from the family's home in southwest
Atlanta. "But I think it does bring a certain bit of closure."
Gonzales told police he pulled into the emergency lane and tried to retrieve the dryer after it fell from his truck Monday night. But with traffic whizzing by, Gonzales drove away. That night, someone called 911 to report that a dryer was in the middle of the highway.A minute later, police received another 911 call — this time to report a wreck. Gonzales told police he wasn't aware of the crash until investigators contacted him Friday. Gonzales said he'd been in South Carolina. Family members at Gonzales' single-story home in Hapeville declined on Sunday to talk about the crash. But his brother said Gonzales feels badly about what happened. — Staff writer Saeed Ahmed contributed to this article. SAFETY TIPS From Georgia Dept. of Transportation
