The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that a world-wide recall of more than 600,000 SUVs will be undertaken by Chrysler in July. Reports from June 6 show that Chrysler also turned down the NHTSA request to recall 2.7 million Jeeps.

Eric Mayne, spokesman for Chrysler, said the large-scale SUV recall consists of an estimated 400,000 Jeep Patriot and Compass models that were discovered to have airbag and seat belt defects and will also include about 220,000 Jeep Wranglers, recalled for leaking transmission fluid. Mayne added that corresponding dealers will be conducting free repairs starting in July.

Malfunctioning software in the Patriot and Compass airbag and seat belt mechanisms can cause serious injuries after a rollover accident.
