The family of the New York Mets prospect that was killed in an SUV rollover accident after leaving spring training has won $131 million in a settlement against Ford Motor Co.
Brian Cole, the prospect for the Mets, was killed from injuries sustained in the rollover accident on March 31, 2001. The accident occurred as his Ford Explorer went off of the side of the road on Highway 8, flipped and rolled over.
The family claimed that the Explorer was defective and dangerous because of it tendency to roll. Ford said that they had no wrongdoing and that the man must have been traveling at an unsafe speed and that the fact that he was not wearing a seat belt caused him to be thrown from the vehicle and killed. Eleven of the 12 jury members agreed with the verdict against Ford.
Rollover accidents can cause serious injury, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim.
