In 2009, a tire blowout caused a Chevy Trailblazer to overturn on Interstate 95. A South Orange, New Jersey man, his wife, and daughter were all inside the 2004 Trailblazer making a road trip from New Jersey to Florida when the accident unfolded.
According to court documents, three days prior to the road trip, the man had taken his vehicle to his local dealership to be serviced. The men working at the dealership did not inform the owner that one of his tires had a bald spot, and poor treading. The technicians only suggested that the tires needed to be rotated.
All three family members were severely injured in the car accident after the vehicle’s tire blew out at 65 miles per hour. The daughter sustained a head injury, her father suffered serious injuries, and her mother also received injuries as a result of the defective tire. The family sued the dealership claiming that the accident could have been avoided if the technicians would not have acted negligently.
A jury in the case sided with the plaintiffs, and awarded them $5.5 million in punitive damages, and $2 million in damages for financial compensation. The jury determined that the rollover accident was caused by the negligence of the car dealer, and handed down a verdict accordingly.
