An auto safety advocate group recently called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate a possible airbag defect in later models of Chevrolet Impalas, Reuters stated on April 7.

According to the Center for Auto Safety, aside from the faulty ignition switches that may disable the airbags of millions of General Motors (GM) vehicles, certain vehicles may also be affected by an airbag defect. The airbags of Chevy Impalas model years 2003-2010 may not launch during a crash if the airbag sensors failed to properly detect the occupant.

The group said that the problem is believed to be linked to hundreds of deaths.

The NHTSA has stated they are studying if a computer problem affects the airbags of the recalled GM vehicles during crashes.
